Happy Sunday TJ Families!
How can it possibly be December this week?!? We hope you had a wonderful Fall Break were able to create new memories. As we embrace the last month of the year please check the TJ Family Blog for ways to celebrate our TJ traditions in new ways!
The last few months have been hard, but we are RISING together!
Please check out the TJ PTC link: Click here to view for information about the virtual 5K and keep checking out the T.J. Blog for information about upcoming spirit events.
Thank you all for all that you have done as a school community to keep our school open. As we start this week, here are a few reminders for parents:
1. If your child complains about being ill or shows symptoms of illness while at school, they will most likely be sent home. When this happens, our district nursing staff will then reach out to the family and inquire about the student, documenting symptoms, and giving a timeline for that student to return to school. This could be the next day, or staying out for a longer period - it all depends on the symptoms and possible COVID-19 risk/exposure. PLEASE NOTE - Thomas Jefferson is bound by the directive of the district office nurse's COVID team and cannot overturn their plan for students to return to school. We appreciate your patience if one of your children becomes ill and has to stay away from school for a period of time, as we CANNOT let students return unless they are cleared by the nursing team. If you have a child out for a period longer than a day or two, your child will be offered school work to stay up to speed on classroom learning.
2. Please do a proper health check of your children BEFORE they come to school - take their temp, ask about queasy tummies and headaches, check for runny and stuffy noses, and listen for coughs. And if your child has symptoms of being sick for any reason, please keep them home until they feel better. We want to keep our school open.
2. Please make sure your child does NOT leave the house without a face covering. THANK YOU TJ Stars for ensuring that this happens daily. We R.I.S.E Together!
Thank you all for learning and leading together!

Below is our UPDATED DISTRICT RCSD Calendar that shows updated Staff Development Days as well as Conference Week, which will now be in February, following the end of Trimester 2!
EVERY family matters and every child matters. The RCSD and TJ communities know that we are in uncertain times. At this time the Free and Reduced Meal Program is supporting all RCSD families, but we need to plan for the future. We are humbly asking that every TJ family apply for this program to ensure that EVERY TJ STAR'S NEEDS are being met. Please take a moment and fill out a Free and Reduced Meal application online at ezmealapp.com.
The application is due by December 15, 2020.
These are times that we all need to come together and RISE for every STAR!
The number of students that qualify for the Free and Reduced Meal program impacts many services and programs that RCSD offers families
RCSD students and schools are at risk of losing 23% of the supplemental grant funding that supports those programs due to the lack of applications submitted to date.
The supplemental grant supports:
- Mental & Health Services - help fund school counselors and health aides.
- Class size reduction - help fund smaller class sizes in Transitional Kindergarten and 4-5 grades.
- Foster youth and homeless services - help fund resources for both foster youth students and students experiencing homelessness.
- Music & Elementary PE - funds a portion of the teachers’ salaries for these programs.
- AVID and IB programs - help to fund school sites that have AVID and IB programs.
- Technology - help to ensure students and staff have internet connectivity.
- Intervention Services - help fund staffing for intervention teachers and other intervention support providers.
- World Language Program - help fund world language teachers at all four of our middle schools.
If you have any questions, please contact your school site or you can visit our Nutrition Services website at rcsdk8.org/nutrition-services for assistance.
Hand Sanitizer Donation
If you are able to donate hand sanitizer to your child's classroom please follow the guidelines below:
- Gel hand sanitizer only, no liquid sanitizer.
- The minimum alcohol content should be 60%, preferred is 70-75%
- Sanitizer should not contain methanol (wood alcohol) - serious health implications, especially for children. FDA has a "do-not-use" list.
- Larger sizes 16.9 oz, 33 oz, or gallon-sized should have pumps for ease of use. Smaller sizes may not be as easy to use but can still be donated.
- Please avoid too many additives (scents, moisturizers, etc) to avoid allergic reactions.
- Please have a single point of contact for hand sanitizer donations in order to ensure it meets the standards before it is distributed to the classrooms.

To keep our students and families safe, we have decided to keep all lost and left behind items that can't be identified by student name, in quarantine in our MPR for one week. Once the week is up, we feel that the items would then be safe to set out
To help mediate lost and found, teachers and staff are giving constant reminders to students to remember to grab jackets/sweatshirts/water bottles from the playground when they go out!
PLEASE NOTE THAT ITEMS WILL BE DONATED ON A WEEKLY BASIS - label jackets, hats, water bottles, etc with your child's name and room number.
