TJ FAMILY BLOG 3/9/18

Hello Thomas Jefferson Families,

What a great week of learning and leading together!  To highlight some of the AMAZING things happening on our campus, our Stars have practiced their hearts out for our upcoming StarStruck performances, our fifth-grade students began Genius Hour and our fourth grade explored Sutter's Fort and the California Indian Museum.  It was a great week indeed!

Several of our TJ families have reached out in regards to school safety.  Every school in RCSD has an extensive school safety plan and it is approved each year by our School Site Council and our School Board.   There are still concerns about the day to day safety of students and staff on our campus, and school safety is an ongoing priority.  Local or National events always provide us with an opportunity to examine our own practices and make improvements. On March 2nd the RCSD and our School Board sent out communication that discussed the district's and it's schools commitment to school safety.   In the letter Superintendent Garcia shared:

"As we reflect on the incident and review our safety planning efforts, it is important to know that our priority has always been, and will always be, the safety of our children and staff.  We all have the right to a safe and secure campus where we are free from physical and emotional harm.  If there ever were an incident at your child’s school, you would be contacted through School Messenger via email, phone message, or text, depending on how you chose to be notified.  As of today, fewer than half of the registered parents are signed up for text notifications.  If you would like to change your elected option in order to receive text messages, please text YES to 67587."

As a school site, we conduct monthly drills and our staff takes time to instruct the expectations for evacuation drills and lockdown drills in their classrooms.  We will be conducting our March monthly drill the week before Spring Break (March19-23, 2018).  This drill will be a formal lockdown drill.  The intent of the drill and the instruction of expectations is not to frighten our students but to prepare them in case there is an emergency.  We appreciate your support at home in helping our students understand this process.

School Safety is the responsibility of us all.  Please take the extra time to WAIT IN LINE in the drop-off and pick up loop. A few minutes are worth the safety of our students.  Our gates close promplty at 8:45 and all adult volunteers sign MUST sign the office, please be patient with this process as it ensures the safety of our students.  If you have questions about RCSD's volunteer policies and procedures please CLICK HERE.

If you have any questions or suggestions please feel free to contact me.

Warm regards,
Kirsten Acke
Principal
